As it approaches its 10th anniversary, the Primorsky Aquarium is gearing up to host an ambitious international conference “Empowering Ocean Conservation through Education and Research” (EOCER-2026) that will gather distinguished experts in interdisciplinary research. The event aims to foster the development of aquariums not merely as public attractions, but as dynamic centers for knowledge generation and ocean stewardship.
Organizers report strong momentum that the event gains, with over 130 submissions already received. The program will feature plenary presentations, thematic sessions, and roundtables covering pressing issues in oceanography, aquaculture, and marine biodiversity conservation.
The roster of participants extends far beyond local institutions. Alongside researchers and specialists from Primorsky Aquarium and regional scientific bodies, leading institutions from across Russia will present their latest findings — including the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Zoological Institute, RAS, St. Petersburg); the Moskvarium Oceanography and Marine Biology Center; the St. Petersburg State University, the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, RAS (Moscow); and the Museum of the World Ocean (Kaliningrad).
A key feature of EOCER-2026 is its international reach. Colleagues from China and Singapore will join the dialogue, sharing their expertise and tackling global challenges in hydrobiology.
According to the organizers, the high level of interest underscores the Primorsky Aquarium’s emergence as a true magnet for the global marine biology community.
“We are eager to see all the participants and have a great deal in store,” says Maria Shulgina, PhD in biology, Scientific Coordinator of the Laboratory of Marine Microalgal Biotechnology and one of the conference organizers. “Our hope is that everyone leaves inspired and that the lasting outcome is mutually beneficial cooperation between institutions.”
The EOCER-2026 will take place at the Primorsky Aquarium on September 14–17, 2026. Those interested in participating can reach out via email at conf@primocean.ru .
