The annual day of remembrance for Academician Aleksey V. Zhirmunsky was marked on October 20th at the A.V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology, Far Eastern Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences (NSCMB FEB RAS). Zhirmunsky founded the NSCMB and was its director for many years.
Beside the traditional commemorating activities, Nadezhda Khristoforova, Alexey Zhirmunsky’s widow, Dr. of Biology and Professor at the Far Eastern Federal University, presented her new memoir book. Anatoly Drozdov, Dr. Sc., Principal Researcher at the Laboratory of Embyology, NSCMB, gave a talk about the life and scientific achievements of the prominent researcher.
‘Akademik Zhirmunsky’ chrysanthemums were cast into the sea to honor the NSCMB founder. This milk white mum developed at the Botanical Garden-Institute of FEB RAS blooms in late autumn and its flowers last for 15 days. Every year the Botanical Garden provides a bouquet for a floating flower ceremony on the day of Alexey Zhirmunsky’s remembrance.
