Primorsky Aquarium team members have replaced drainage covers installed for marine mammal safety. These covers are constructed in such a manner as to prevent animal entrapment by water flow around the drainage pipe.
Each drainage cover looks like a dome-shaped strainer made of stainless steel. They are securely fastened over all the drain holes. There are 1 to 7 of these holes in each pool.
Anton Brykov, Head of Marine Mammals Division, explained that the drainage covers can work for about five years on average. Though they are made of high-quality stainless steel, seawater, which is a very harsh environment, induces corrosion and degradation of metal structures with time. It is therefore required to replace them after a certain period. Engineers and divers installed three new dome-shaped drainage covers.
